Hound

Variable Serif
& Hound / Black 900 / 320pt

A variable serif drawn from 19th-century broadside type, smoothed for the screen. Hound is the flagship of the foundry — built for editorial, fashion, and brand work that wants weight without shouting. The italics are slow and considered.

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single object in possession of a good axis must be in want of a weight.

Causeway

Display Sans

A geometric display sans, drawn for posters that need to carry a room. Causeway has a narrow proportion and a tall x-height, so it sits in close-set caps without fighting itself. The terminals are flat-cut. There are no soft corners.

SET IN ALL CAPS. SET IN MIXED CASE. SET LOUD ON THE PRINTED PAGE OR QUIETLY ON A WORKING SCREEN. CAUSEWAY DOES NOT MIND.

Ridgeway

Slab Mono
@ Ridgeway / Medium 500 / 320pt

A slab-serif monospace, drawn for code, captions, and the technical underside of a brand. Each glyph fills its cell. The slabs are short and squared. There is a full set of programming ligatures, and a separate optical-sized variant for body copy.

const broadside = (face) => face.weight && face.optical_size;
// returns true for every weight in this catalogue.

04 / The Foundry

A small studio
off Hatton Garden.

Broadside is a one-designer foundry working from a first-floor studio in Clerkenwell, EC1. Every shape on the site was drawn by hand on plate glass, refined in Glyphs, and shipped as variable OpenType. The foundry started in 2018 with a single face. Eight years later, three.

The brief is always the same: take loud type drawn for 19th-century broadsides — handbills, theatre posters, public notices — and quiet it down without taking the bones out. Type that still has muscle, but won't fight the page.

  1. 01
Drawn by hand. Every glyph starts as a pencil drawing. The bezier curves come last, not first. It is slower. It shows.
  2. 02
OpenType, all the way through. ss01 to ss04, fractions, smallcaps, alternates, swashes. Not retrofitted. Drawn in from the brief.
  3. 03
Variable axis on every face. One file. Infinite weights between Thin and Black. Shipped alongside the static OTFs, not instead of.
  4. 04
Lifetime updates. If a face gets a new weight, a new alternate, a new axis — you get it. Same file URL, no upsell.

Six designers, four studios, one literary magazine. Set in Broadside, in real work that shipped.

USE 01 · HOUND

A masthead
that does the work.

"We set the title page in Hound Black Italic and the rest of the magazine in the Roman, opsz 9. The masthead carries the issue without us having to redraw it every quarter."

Iris Mohan Art director, The Long Form Quarterly · London
USE 02 · CAUSEWAY

CAUSEWAY HOLDS
A TWO-METRE POSTER.

"Set Causeway Hairline in 1m caps for a cinema poster series. It does not break apart at scale. The terminals stay sharp at thirty metres back."

Studio Halftone Brand & print · Manchester
USE 03 · RIDGEWAY

code in Ridgeway,
caption in Hound.

"We rebuilt the design-system docs around Ridgeway. Mono for code, opsz 9 for captions, ligatures off. The team stopped fighting the font and started writing."

Patel & Reyes Design systems studio · Bristol
USE 04 · LIBRARY

A whole brand
from one foundry.

"Brand wordmark in Hound, body in Causeway, captions in Ridgeway. Three faces, one bill. The licence covers the agency, the client, and every spin-off product through 2034."
